DISTURBED/DEVICE Singer Speaks Out Against Bullying (Video)

DISTURBED and DEVICE frontman David Draiman taped a three-minute public service announcement (PSA) for the Musicians Opposed To Bullying (M.O.B.) web site addressing the ever-growing problem of bullying, and especially cyber-bullying — the use of technology such as the Internet and phone texting to harass or humiliate others. "I'm here to talk to you today about bullying, the damage it does to people and how easy it is to execute in the modern-day age of Internet usage," Draiman can be heard saying in the clip.

"Cyber-bullying has become a very tremendous problem. It makes the weak feel weaker, [and] it enables the predators to prey upon the helpless, and it is more damaging than you can possibly imagine. The repercussions are tangible, and they are devastating.

"You really need to understand the weight of your words before you type them. You need to understand how they can affect a person's life, how they can affect a person's vision of themselves and opinion of themselves. It can turn from self-consciousness to depression to thoughts of suicide. It's irresponsible, it's incorrigible and it's unforgivable.

"If you tend to be victimized by any of these animals who prey upon the weak, know that all you have to do is walk away from it, all you have to do is shut off the computer, all you have to do is block or delete, and at the end of the day, never take what they're saying personally. It's a contest for them, it's a game. These are sick individuals who have nothing better to do with their lives other than to sit behind their keyboard and pretend to be God, and pretend to cast judgment on each and every one of those who they have the ability to victimize, because it gets them kudos in the troll world, because it makes them feel powerful.

"You should know that many of these people are, in fact, weak people; they are not the quintessential, stereotypical bullies that you see on television, they are not the quintessential, stereotypical bullies that you meet in high school on a daily basis. They are usually people who've been victimized themselves, they are usually people who come from broken homes, from environments where they were abused, and they are lashing out at the world in the most angry and effective way that they have at their disposal, utilizing their greatest instrument of escape and fantasy that they have at their disposal.

"If you are ever victimized by these people, report them. Let your parents know, let your teachers know, let your family know, let them get involved. Do not let it consume you. You need to be stronger. You deserve to be stronger. And you will be stronger."

Draiman announced last month that he and his wife, Japanese-American model, actress and wrestler Lena Yada, are expecting their first child.

DEVICE released its self-titled debut album on April 9. It debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard album chart, selling 35,000 copies in its first week of release.
